Flachau in the summer is stunning. The weather is warm, the evenings are long and the scenery is breathtaking. The view from the apartment of the sun lighting up the Dachstein mountain range is eye catching and the distant sound of cow bells ringing conjures up images of Julie Andrews and the sound of music.
Flachau is a great summer vacation spot for whatever you enjoy doing, from Para gliding to white water rafting, from hiking to fishing, and from swimming to horse riding, or even just enjoying the views with a cold beer, Flachau has it all.
- Ski lifts
There is a lot to do in the Flachau during the summer. Most of the ski lifts reopen for the summer season which creates fantastic alpine hiking opportunities and it is great fun to watch the Para gliders launching themselves into midair off the cliffs and then soaring away to incredible heights.
Equally enjoyable are the frequent falcon displays that can be viewed from several of the mountain huts in the area.
- The Grafenberg
The Grafenberg in Wagrain is accessed by ski lift and is fun to visit. There are dozens of climbing frames, swings, mountain lake activities and other exciting things for the children to do.
- The Geisterberg
The Geisterberg at Alpendorf, just outside St. Johnann is definitely worth a visit. There is a great play area at the bottom of the gondola. The whole of the top of the mountain, including the peak has been converted into a children's adventure park. There are climbing frames, water play areas, hidden scary monsters and even a huge wooden dragon for the children to play on.
- Jägersee
The Jägersee is one of our favourite picnic places to go in the summer. It is about 5 km further than Kleinarl and is accessed through Wagrain. This lake is absolutely beautiful with crystal clear water and stunning scenery. The lake itself is fed by a mountain stream headed by two spectacular waterfalls. There are plenty of mountain hikes for the adventurous and easy walking around the lake for those with small children. The woods are full of the most delicious wild strawberries which just burst with flavour.
- Swimming
There is an adventure swimming pool in Wagrain. For more tranquil swimming, there are small swimming lakes in Flachauwinkl and Reitstadt.
- Horse Riding
The stables in Reitstadt are great for young riders, and riding lessons are easy to arrange.
- Mountain Biking
The region is very popular for mountain biking, and these are available for rent in the village.
- Festivals
There are regular mountain festivals throughout the summer and plenty of child friendly activities.
- Play Areas
Children's petting zoos are very common, the nearest is at the "Musistadl" only five minutes walk away from the apartment. Further up the Griessenkarweg is the Waldgasthof which has a playground for the kids and food and drink for the adults, an alternative is the Sattelbauer which rests on a mountain ridge and has stunning views on both sides.
- National Parks
The Grossglockner national park and wild life zoo are well worth visiting and some of the gorges in the area such as the Lichtenstein Klamm in St. Johann will amaze you.
The Burg Hohenwerfen castle and the ice caves are not to be missed, and then there is Salzburg...
